Proposed Notice Regarding Pollution Prevention Planning in Respect of Mercury Releases from Dental Amalgam Waste

On April 18, 2009 Environment Canada published a Proposed Notice link under Part 4 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999) outlining proposed requirements to prepare and implement a pollution prevention plan for mercury releases from dental amalgam waste. The Proposed Notice, published in the Canada Gazette, Part I for a 60 day comment period, targets dental facilities that have not implemented all of the best management practices set out in the “Memorandum of Understanding Respecting the Implementation of the Canada-wide Standard on Mercury for Dental Amalgam Waste” between the Canadian Dental Association and Environment Canada for the voluntary implementation of the Canada-wide Standard on Mercury for Dental Amalgam Waste. After considering comments received during this 60 day comment period, a Final Notice requiring the preparation and implementation of pollution prevention plans for mercury releases from dental amalgam waste will be published in Part I of the Canada Gazette.

Please provide your written comments on the Proposed Notice and related schedules by June 17, 2009 to:
